Metro Manila, which has witnessed several milestones in the young history of the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA), was once again the venue of a recent special executive Committee Meeting. This was held to determine the relationship between YLDA and the Liberal Youth of South Asia (LYSA). To facilitate this, YLDA President Jonathan Malaya and the rest of the executive committee invited LYSA President Robin Sitoula to join the two-day discussions. Three out of the four LYSA member organizations belong to YLDA. These are the Youth Initiative-Nepal, the Institute of Democracy and Leadership Youth Guilds-Sri Lanka, and the Future Youth Group-Pakistan. At the meeting’s conclusion, it was agreed that LYSA shall become YLDA’s working group for South Asia.

Taking place just a few days shy of the Lunar New Year, the Young Liberals of the Philippines (KALIPI) organized a workshop entitled "Strengthening Youth Wings of Liberal Political Parties in Asia". The coincidence was not lost on the participants as they held their discussions on the changes needed to redefine the role young liberals should play in political affairs in the coming year. Delegates from the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) joined the KALIPI last January 23-27, 2006 in Manila and Baguio City. The seminar was supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

To say to be living in "interesting" times in the Philippines depends on perspective. If this does not make for an "interesting" time, what else will?

Nieke Kulsum of Indonesia's Garda BangsaYouth and Kwan Wing Yip of Hong Kong Democratic Party Youth Committee, are busy scribbling keywords into colored squares of papers. Beside them, their group mates are brainstorming. "Freedom of assembly," says one. "Right to vote, right to oppose, freedom to information," offers another. In other corners of the room, participants hailing from the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) member organizations and observers from the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) are similarly deep in debate or listening to somebody share a political experience from back home.
