YLDA to Hold Workshop on Education; Elect New Set of Officers 2006-08-10
The Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) will be holding its 4th
Young Leaders Workshop on 11 - 16 August 2006 in Lahore, Pakistan.
The workshop will have the theme, "Promoting Progressive Education:
the Role of Asian Youth." Among workshop activities is a liberal forum on the Pakistani education system. Participants will also visit the Learning School, a liberal educational institution in Pakistan.
"Education and its quality has always been a major concern of the youth
worldwide. Asia, more than ever, is dependent on
a competitive educational system to compete in a globalizing world," says Jan-Argy
Y. Tolentino, National Secretary General of YLDA member-organization Kabataang
Liberal ng Pilipinas (KALIPI) and conference director of the workshop.
YLDA will also hold its 3rd General Assembly on the last day
of the event. The president of YLDA and the working committees will give reports. Key items in the general assembly agenda includes the ptogram of action for 2006. An election of a new
set of officers will also be held.
The 4th Young Leaders Workshop and 3rd YLDA General
Assembly will be hosted by the Future Youth Group
(FYG) and the Liberal Forum of
Paklistan. The Friedrich Naumann
Foundation is supporting this gathering of Asian young liberals.
Garda Bangsa was formed in 1998 following the successful political reform spearheaded
by students and other campus activists to depose the tyrannical regime of President
Suharto. The organization was founded by Abdurram Wahid, a former adviser of President
Suharto who resigned following an escalation in government corruption and political
management by the administration. He championed "Responsible Openness"
within the government system and proposed the establishment of a Reform Committee
in order to mitigate poor governance within the administration. His calls were
left unheeded and so he eventually withdrew support for the government and joined
the efforts advocating for reform in the government. Read more...
